when was first camera invented ?

It might seem hard to define, but the word 'camera' can be traced back around 5th century Greece went there were some early forms of human photography.

The first camera was probably a pinhole camera created by Dutch physicist, spectacle makers and inventor Hans Lippershey in that year.

The device was made from two lenses that were joined together with a wooden frame. One lens focused an image into the other lens which then focused on a piece of flax-paper coated with bitumen and silver chloride mixed with wax near to where the two lenses met. This made it possible for the user to see an image without actually focusing on anything.

When Lippershey took his device to the States and demonstrated it to his friends. They were so impressed that they suggested he contact the States government and in 1608, a man called Johannes Kepler, took him to the States, who understood it enough to produce a description of it and drawings of it.

By the 19th century other forms of photography had been invented including Daguerreotypes by Louis-Jacques-Mand Daguerre and Talbot's wet plate which used chemical methods.

It was not until 1839 that photography had developed into a "usable" art form when Hugh Percy, Earl of Northumberland revealed his son Algernon's portrait taken by John W. Phiztreps the previous year. It was now possible for the first time to take pictures of people and record them with a camera.

The first snapshot was taken by Louis-Jacques Mand

Daguerre on 8 April 1839. The first use of a camera, however, is generally claimed to be in 1838 when Sir William Crookes showed his daughter Annie some "magic lanterns" that produced startling images in a darkened room. (Crookes had discovered CPD about ten years earlier which he called "resin for darkrooms. ")

By 1839, people were already referring to "photography" and the early pictures that resulted from this "new process", making it clear that the new technology was not magic or some form of black magic.

This process was expensive, but within a year, photographers began to use paper negatives instead of the pricey camera-ready gelatine surfaces and by 1850 paper negatives were widely used.

The next development came in 1851 when Alexander Wolcott Beard took out a patent in England for a roll-holder and rotary camera. This allowed photographers to take several pictures with one turn of the holder's handle.

But it was not until the 1870s that photography evolved into the art form it is today. The development of photography in this period was rapid, with many new methods introduced each year.

The first step in developing photosensitive paper came in 1874 – when an American called George Eastman developed a method of dissolving silver chloride on glass plates to produce photographs.

In 1878, Louis Cartier had already invented the first camera tripod and a patent for what we now call a "flashgun" was taken out by an Englishman named John Henry Foley.
